August 30, 2010

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – (August 21) – United Way of Broward County organized a Back to School Fair for Sunland Park Elementary students and their families on August 21. The families enjoyed variety of activities including arts and crafts, face painting and a magic show. Boys received free haircuts while girls created homemade jewelry.

“This is all part of United Way of Broward County’s efforts to get parents more involved with their children’s education at Sunland Park Elementary. It was great to see families working side by side during the arts and crafts activities,” said Dr. Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, president & CEO of United Way of Broward County. “Everyone had a fantastic time and we wish these students the best of luck for the upcoming school year.”

The Back to School Fair was part of United Way of Broward County’s Sunland Park Initiative working with Broward County Public Schools to improve the area’s academic success. This initiative targets children age three to seven (third grade) and will provide support to the entire family, including siblings. It focuses on early learning skills, parent involvement and family literacy. The long-term goal is to follow this group of students for a minimum of three years, starting in Pre-School and following them until the completion of the third grade.

All students received free backpacks donated by Veriloquent Cares on the first day of school. JM Family Enterprises, Inc. and Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC sponsored the Back to School Fair. Food was provided by Offerdahl’s Café Grill, Frito Lay and Publix Super Markets. Additional sponsors included: Broward College; Broward Health; Memorial Healthcare System and Maroone, An AutoNation Company.

United Way of Broward County will return to the school on October 29 for the 19th Annual Day of Caring to landscape and build a parent resource center for Sunland Park Elementary and the surrounding areas.
