Social Norms

"4 out of 5 Everglades High School Students prefer not to drink when hanging out with friends."

In a collaborative with the Broward County Public Schools, the Commission on Substance Abuse has conducted the Social Norms Campaign since 2005 at Everglades High School. This social marketing project targets approximately 3400 youth annually in order to reduce underage drinking. The social norms model proposes that much of young people's problem behavior is due, in part, by the desire, or social pressure, to conform to erroneously perceived peer norms.

By educating youth, parents, and school personnel on actual social norms at their Everglades High School, it is expected that a greater proportion of the target population will begin to act in accordance with the more accurately perceived norms of health, protection, and safety.
