Income Initiative

Building Generations

Building Generations is a Coral Springs-based initiative that brings together low income seniors and youth to build financial stability and healthy lifestyles through neighborhood coalitions.  ARC Broward manages the program that is designed to build bridges between generations through such activities as education in literacy, personal budgeting and other life skills.  Training is provided through collaborations with several local agencies, including Senior Volunteer Services, FLIPANY, ResBeat, and CareSource, all operating out of the Broward County’s Family Success Center.

During the first two years, 180 individuals participated in the program, with 71 percent completing the Fiscal Literacy and Independence Project (FLIP) and 88 percent reporting an increase in knowledge of meal/food budgeting.

United Way is providing $250,000 a year for three years to support the Building Generations program.

Project Lifeline

Project Lifeline is a food distribution program involving more than 25 food banks throughout Broward County.  Nutritious food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, ground beef, chicken, grains, pastas, and canned goods, is purchased and distributed to these feeding centers.  Centralizing the food purchases allows the food banks to enjoy the cost benefits of bulk purchasing, and therefore, increase the volume of food available to individuals and families in need.  The healthy food is delivered on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis, depending on the needs and volume of clientele visiting each food pantry.   Throughout the year, food quality, food delivery, and overall operation of the program are measured.

From May 2009 through January 2011, 850,000 clients and families were served, and more than 3.3 million pounds of nutritious food were distributed.

United Way is investing a total of $1,255,000 between May 2009 and June 2011 - $900,000 for nutritious food distribution to the needy through more than 25 local food banks and $355,000 to low-income families for free legal services, and assistance with rent, utility and medical payments. This initiative received major support from the Jim Moran Foundation

Center for Working Families

United Way Worldwide is committed to decreasing by 50% the number of families who are financially unstable by 2018.  To accomplish this goal locally, United Way of Broward County has formed a collaborative partnership with The Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Hispanic Unity of Florida and Urban League of Broward County, to establish the Center for Working Families prosperity initiative.  The goal is to provide individualized economic, employment and educational support services to help clients achieve and maintain economic stability.

Services are provided at two physical sites:  Hispanic Unity of Florida in Hollywood and Urban League of Broward County in central Broward County.  An integral component of the Center for Working Families is United Way of Broward County’s Mobile Resource Center, a 34’ RV which travels throughout the county to provide free tax preparations, benefits screening, financial and job coaching and numerous other services.

United Way is providing $250,000 a year for three years to support the Center for Working Families initiative.
