On Wednesday, June 12, United Way of Broward County showed its appreciation for the hundreds of volunteers who made the inaugural year of the ReadingPals program such a great success with a special breakfast held at the Urban League of Broward County’s new facility.
ReadingPals connects volunteer tutors with students Pre-K through 3rd grade to generate a lifetime love of the written word and to improve reading and comprehension skills to ensure children are reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
“It is not a cliché when we say to our volunteers, ‘We couldn’t have done it without you!’” said Kathleen Cannon, CEO of United Way of Broward County. “Our volunteers are so committed and such a wonderful force for positive change in this community – we owe them a debt of gratitude. This breakfast is just a small token of our deep appreciation for the success of our pilot year of
The program requires that volunteers dedicate one hour per week for 25 weeks to read to an individual student or in a small group. Lynn S. Armbrecht, who is First Vice President, Treasury & Payment Solutions for Sun Trust Bank was one of the volunteers who made the decision to impact a young student’s life. “It is so rewarding to see the progress that my student has made since the inception of the Reading Pals Program,” she said. “Just spending one hour each week with him has improved his speech, reading comprehension and most importantly his self-confidence. The bond that we have formed has made a lasting impact in both of our lives.”
United Way of Broward County has always been a strong advocate for literacy. The breakfast honoring volunteers was also the launch of year two of its unique partnership with select schools through its ReadingPals program. This year, United Way of Broward County is targeting twelve schools, with the program starting in September 2013. Trainings for the volunteers will start in July.
