United Way of Broward County is proud to announce that their initiative MISSION UNITED, a critical program supporting US military service members, veterans and their families in Broward County by helping them re-acclimate to civilian life, was awarded the prestigious 2014 United Way Common Good Award for Mobilizing Resources by United Way Worldwide. United Way of Broward County was presented with the award, which is given annually to only three United Way chapters worldwide (there are currently 1800 United Way chapters worldwide in 45 countries and territories) during United Way Community Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. on May 12-15.
United Way Common Good Awards recognize and spotlight community collaborations and partnerships that are strengthening communities by creating lasting change and advancing education, income, and health. The awards highlight innovative and promising practices from communities around the world that are achieving results and advancing the common good. This year the award recognized excellence and effectiveness in the collaborations with a focus on Impact, Mobilizing Resources, and Innovation.
United Way of Broward County’s MISSION UNITED initiative was honored with the United Way Common Good Award in recognition of the wide array of resources that the organization has mobilized to support the care and needs of military veterans and their families. In less than two years after its launch, the MISSION UNITED initiative has aligned public and private resources and services to form a comprehensive system of care that is easy for veterans and their families to navigate. MISSION UNITED has provided assistance to more than 1,500 active military service members, veterans and their families in the areas of housing, employment, education, health, legal assistance and emergency financial aid.
MISSION UNITED has responded to more than 1,000 calls for legal assistance, and the recruitment of 270 lawyers have provided $135,000 in pro bono legal assistance to veterans and military families. More than 460 veterans and military families have secured housing, and MISSION UNITED is currently working with 73 partner companies to place veterans with jobs.
“We are so thrilled for United Way of Broward County to be honored with the prestigious United Way Common Good Award for Mobilizing Resources,” said Kathleen Cannon, President and CEO of United Way of Broward County. “In such a short period of time, MISSION UNITED has worked diligently to align our local resources and to connect our dedicated men and women returning to South Florida with a wide array of services to make the transition easier and help them get their lives back.”
Winners of United Way Common Good Awards demonstrate strong collaboration across a variety of sectors, and are engaging stakeholders to develop outcome-focused strategies that are rooted in the community’s agenda.
