BROWARD COUNTY, FL – (May 3, 2010) – United Way of Broward County raised $100,000 to be invested in Project S.H.A.R.E. (Strategic Haitian Aid and Relief Efforts). The total investment represents a combination of individual and corporate donations.
The funds from Project S.H.A.R.E. have been used to purchase super market gift cards, bus passes, gasoline vouchers and provide support to local agencies that assist refugees in applying for Temporary Protective Status. Items have been distributed to displaced Haitian earthquake victims through community partners such as Broward County Public Schools, Legal Aid of Broward County, Minority Development and Empowerment Inc. and Urban League of Broward County.
United Way of Broward County is a participating member of the Haitian Relief Task Force Victim Services Committee. This group, along with other long-standing collaborations will assist United Way in the ongoing monitoring of needs and the identification of faith-based organizations and other non-traditional service providers that may have established roots in the Haitian community.
Broward County Public Schools enrolled over 1,000 children as of May 3. “In addition to the struggling economy, more and more Haitian earthquake evacuees are arriving in South Florida every day,” said Dr. Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, president & CEO of United Way of Broward County. “Many have moved in with their relatives already living in our community and will require more resources to accommodate ongoing needs for basics, such as assistance with food and clothing.”
Large Project S.H.A.R.E. contributors include ABB Concise, Broward Health, David Clarke, GDKN Corporation, Hyatt Regency Pier 66, John Kirkpatrick, Memorial Healthcare System, Charles Nock, David and Carrie Schulman, Premier Auto Finance and West Pines United Futbol Inc. AT&T also donated $2,500 in calling cards for families to connect with their loved ones in Haiti.
