United Way Celebrates Grand Opening of Jean and David Colker Center

November 17, 2015

More than 150 attendees, including local dignitaries, veterans and community members gathered to celebrate the opening of the new Jean and David Colker Center on November 10th. The event began with opening remarks from Kathleen Cannon, President/CEO of United Way of Broward County and was followed by a flag raising ceremony, remarks by Jean Colker, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Mike Kaufman of Kaufman Lynn Construction. Guests then gathered for a ceremonial ribbon cutting with key contributors and supporters, including Jean Colker, Stephen Moss, Founding Chair of MISSION UNITED and Chancellor Ray Ferrero Jr. of Nova Southeastern University.

“On behalf of United Way of Broward County, I would like to thank each and every person who has supported MISSION UNITED, this project and generously contributed to making it possible,” said Kathleen Cannon, President/CEO of United Way of Broward County. “We look forward to welcoming our veterans and providing our services to help them lead more successful lives as civilians.”

For more than 50 years, Jean Colker and her late husband, David, have impacted the community through their family business and philanthropic initiatives. Jean is proud to support MISSION UNITED and pay tribute to those who have fought for our country and freedom. During the ceremony, Jean presented Kathleen Cannon with a surprise donation of $100,000 to benefit MISSION UNITED.  Kaufman Lynn Construction, also presented a $50,000 check to help United Way of Broward County continue to provide extensive services to local veterans.

The new Center, located across from United Way of Broward County’s offices now serves as a centralized location where veterans and military service members can go to receive case management services provided by MISSION UNITED. A community-based initiative convening and aligning public and private resources in Broward County, MISSION UNITED aims to support U.S. military service members, veterans and their families by helping them re-acclimate to civilian life. Since its conception, MISSION UNITED has assisted more than 2,000 Broward County veterans with housing, employment, education, emergency financial aid, legal and health services.  In 2015, there has been an estimated 2028.91 cumulative pro bono attorney hours equaling a value of about $608,673 of legal services.  In 2014, there were 1068.98 pro bono attorney hours valued at $320,694 of legal services.

Those interested in contributing to support and honor our veterans can purchase symbolic artful stars for $5,000, which adorn a tribute wall inside the lobby of the Colker Center. For more information or to make a donation, please call 954-4-UNITED or visit www.MISSIONUNITED.org
