United Way of Broward County is asking people to contribute to its Teachers Rock campaign by sharing their most inspiring stories about teachers who changed their lives. As a strong message of support for teachers in the community, the stories will be posted on United Way of Broward County’s website. The overall goal of the Teachers Rock campaign is to pay tribute to teachers and support good teaching.

United Way of Broward County will select the top three most inspirational Broward teacher stories and recognize the teachers in local publication advertisements. All stories are welcome, but winners must be active or retired Broward County teachers. The deadline to submit stories is Tuesday, May 1, 2012.

“Every day, teachers inspire, change lives, and put their hearts and souls into the important work of educating our children,” said Howard Bakalar, Senior VP of Community Impact, United Way of Broward County. “We believe they deserve the encouragement, resources and support needed to be great teachers.”

The campaign is led by United Way of Broward County’s Empowering Effective Teachers Task Force, a broad coalition of educators, community and corporate leaders developing policy recommendations and actions supporting effective teachers and ensuring Broward County children’s success.

The Empowering Effective Teachers Initiative is a two-year United Way project that brings together educators with community, government and business leaders to develop ideas and strategies that support teacher development. Funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through United Way Worldwide, the premise of the Initiative is the single most significant factor impacting student achievement that schools can control is an effective teacher. Because every child deserves an effective teacher in every subject, every year, United Way is focused on mobilizing the community to empower our teachers with the tools and resources they need to be successful.
