United Way of Broward County announced the appointment of Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie and ARC Broward Inc. President and CEO Dennis Haas, Esq., to its board of directors.
“We look forward to benefiting from their insights and experiences,” said Lynne Wines, United Way of Broward County Board Chair. “Both Superintendent Runcie and Dennis Haas have an extensive knowledge of the needs and opportunities within the community and they will truly be great assets to the board.”
Robert W. Runcie is Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, the nation’s sixth largest public school system. He formerly served as Chief of Staff to the Board of Education, Chicago Public Schools in Illinois, the third largest school district in the nation, with more than 430,000 students. During his tenure in Chicago, he served as Chief Area Officer and Chief Administrative Officer. He also served as the district’s Chief Information Officer where he provided leadership in implementing the largest web-based student information system in the country.
Runcie was the first member of his family to attend college and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard College and a master’s degree in business administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. He is a Broad Fellow and graduate of the 2009 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
Runcie firmly believes that dramatically transforming public education is among the most important work to be done in this country, so that all children can receive the quality education they deserve. He has successfully applied the best business practices acquired in the private sector to improving public education operations and instructional strategies.
Dennis Haas, Esq. is the President and CEO of ARC Broward, Inc., a nationally accredited not for profit organization that has been providing services to children and adults with autism, intellectual disabilities and various other disadvantages for more than 55 years. ARC Broward provides a broad range of services and operates several mission-based enterprises that provide employment opportunities and help generate funds for programs.
During the first 18 years of his professional experience, Haas practiced law at Legal Aid Services of Broward before entering into private practice where he specialized in the areas of corporate healthcare, public finance and governmental relations as a shareholder in two of the region’s most respected law firms.
Haas is the current Chair of the Broward Chamber of Non Profit Organizations, which brings together health and human services providers to facilitate collaborative and creative opportunities. He has also served as a member in leadership positions of many nonprofit and community Boards including the Governor's Constituency for Children, Florida Association for Rehabilitation Facilities, Broward Special Needs Advisory Committee (SNAC), Workforce One, and many more. Haas has a B.A. from the University of Florida and juris doctorate from Nova University Law Center.
