United Way of Broward County lends a hand to financially unstable families by providing free tax preparation services aboard its Mobile Resource Center. The branded RV, along with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workers, will be touring Broward County February 5 through April 15 in order to reach residents who do not have the ability or means to access accountants nor financial advisors. In addition, Hispanic Unity of Florida will be operating the mobile VITA unit throughout tax season.

Today United Way of Broward County unveils its Mobile Resource Center which is an integral part of the Center for Working Families initiative. These Centers are strategically located at the Urban League of Broward County, Hispanic Unity and aboard the United Way’s retrofitted and innovative recreational vehicle dubbed the Mobile Resource Center which has the unique ability to reach pockets of the community where families do not have the time or the means to get to the fixed sites.

Sample delectable foods prepared live by Fort Lauderdale’s top chefs and exquisite wines from all over the world at United Way of Broward County’s “Red & White – Wine and Culinary Delight”, presented by Consolidated Credit Counseling Services, Inc. and Premier Beverage Company. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six on February 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Crystal Ballroom, with a VIP reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Pier top.

Nearly 2,300 community and business leaders joined United Ways of Broward and Miami-Dade on November 28-29, for a charity cruise aboard Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Allure of the Seas, which raised $1.3 million to help improve lives throughout Broward and Miami-Dade communities. In addition, $100,000 from the proceeds has been awarded to Royal Caribbean International's education efforts in Haiti.

(JM Family) increased contributions to United Way of Broward County by more than $50,000 for the 2010/11 giving season. More than $175,000 was raised through the continued support of dedicated long-time contributors and an impressive response by first-time donors.

Empowering Effective Teachers Op-ed

One of United Way of Broward County’s major focus areas is education; supporting organizations providing educational opportunities for children pre-school through high school. Recognizing the need for progressive approach to reducing high school dropout rates, United Way launched three initiatives, ‘Empowering Effective Teachers’, ‘Family Engagement for High School Success’, and ‘Sunland Park’. The idea is to convene key partners focusing on the complimentary goal of reducing the dropout rate, and increasing student achievement and growth.
