United Way of Broward County’s President and CEO, Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D. is visiting Washington D.C. to participate in the White House Community Leaders Briefing Series on July 15. Anderson is part of a delegation from South Florida made up of non-profit leaders organized by Barbara Weinstein, President and CEO of Family Central, Inc. The overall goal of the Series is to improve communications between community leaders and Washington.

More Than $14,000 Worth of Supplies Raised to Support Local Teachers

United Way of Broward County partnered with Broward College to provide Broward County teachers of Title 1 schools with much needed school supplies for the 2011 Day of Action. More than $14,000 worth of supplies were collected from May 1 - 31 and presented to the Broward Education Foundation and Charter Schools USA on United Way of Broward County’s official Day of Action, June 1, 2011.

United Way of Broward County’s Mobile Resource Center and Hispanic Unity’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workers provided nearly 400 Broward County working families free tax assistance, filing Earned Income Tax Credits totaling $444,320. The Mobile Resource Center, a 34’ branded RV generously donated by United Way donors, Jim Stork and Ron Ansin, toured local businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and churches in Broward County from February 5 through April 15 to offer services to qualifying working families.

United Way of Broward County’s Board of Directors approved Health funding allocations totaling $1.5 million to be distributed to local non-profit agencies for the 2011/2012 fiscal year. Funded programs will address critical issues and gaps in services within target areas including: special needs/disabilities, mental health, healthy choices, senior care, HIV/AIDS prevention, support/Hospice care, training, domestic violence, substance abuse and health services/clinics.

Featuring photographs spanning slightly more than a 60-year time period, the Museum of Art I Fort Lauderdale’s exhibition The Art of Caring: A Look at Life through Photography examines the moments that shape our being and how key events in life are celebrated and honored. It also explores how pivotal decisions are made by different cultures throughout the world. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum June 5-Sept. 25, 2011.

The new site will give United Way partners, funded agencies, community members, donors and volunteers easier access to information through its enhanced capabilities. Revamped tools include improved navigation, online fundraising, event registration, photo and video galleries, social media outlets and a blog.
