Nearly 2,300 community and business leaders joined United Ways of Broward and Miami-Dade on November 28-29, for a charity cruise aboard Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Allure of the Seas, which raised $1.3 million to help improve lives throughout Broward and Miami-Dade communities. In addition, $100,000 from the proceeds has been awarded to Royal Caribbean International's education efforts in Haiti.

As part of its annual giving campaign, associates at JM Family Enterprises, Inc. (JM Family) increased contributions to United Way of Broward County by more than $50,000 for the 2010/11 giving season. Empowering Effective Teachers Op-ed

One of United Way of Broward County’s major focus areas is education; supporting organizations providing educational opportunities for children pre-school through high school. Recognizing the need for progressive approach to reducing high school dropout rates, United Way launched three initiatives, ‘Empowering Effective Teachers’, ‘Family Engagement for High School Success’, and ‘Sunland Park’. The idea is to convene key partners focusing on the complimentary goal of reducing the dropout rate, and increasing student achievement and growth.

United Way of Broward County kicked off its giving campaign season at a networking breakfast at the Signature Grand on September 16. The morning’s program recognized last year’s Leadership Givers and honored their commitment to improving lives in Broward County. Leadership Givers are donors contributing $1,000 or more annually to United Way initiatives.

United Way of Broward and Miami-Dade counties are the beneficiaries of the overnight charity cruise November 28-29, on Royal Caribbean International’s newest ship, Allure of the Seas. The one-night cruise will offer charitable contributors an opportunity to be among the first to experience this oceanic wonder, the second in a class of the world's largest and most innovative passenger ships, before she makes her maiden voyage in December. The ship's naming ceremony, a time-honored tradition rich in pomp and circumstance, also will be held as part of this benefit.

United Way of Broward County organized a Back to School Fair for Sunland Park Elementary students and their families on August 21. The families enjoyed variety of activities including arts and crafts, face painting and a magic show. Boys received free haircuts while girls created homemade jewelry.
