United Way of Broward County’s Young Leaders Society hosted Rock United, the organization’s first-ever battle of the bands. Nearly 500 people were in attendance of the event on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Revolution Live.
“Rock United was an exciting new event unlike any other fundraiser,” said United Way of Broward County President/CEO Kathleen Cannon. “Our Young Leaders Society is a dynamic group of community leaders who came up with an amazing event that was fun for all ages.”
Fifteen local bands tried out for the battle, but only eight were selected to participate in the contest. The eight finalists were judged on the quality of their voices, overall sound, song choice and ability to engage the audience. Each contributing band played three songs on the main stage.
Local rock radio personality and industry veteran of 13 years, John Spano aka “Spano,” served as the event emcee. The battle’s judges included: Ashley Owen of 97.3 The Coast, two-time Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Elsten Torres, and VMA and Emmy-nominated video artist, Milcho.
Participating bands included: Face2Face, Planet Abyss, Rejection Damage, Shatterglass, Soundcircles, The Associates, The EXECutioners, and The Nothing Left. The Rock United 2012 champion was Shatterglass.
All proceeds from the evening will directly help the community through our focus areas: Mission United, Pathway to Prosperity, Emergency Needs, Improving People’s Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, and Youth Success.
