UNITED WAY OF BROWARD COUNTY TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY was established in order to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of our most generous and community-minded investors.  In the spirit of the great philosopher, Alexis de Tocqueville, and his admiration of voluntarism in America, United Way of America founded the Tocqueville Society in 1984.  The United Way of Broward County Tocqueville Society was founded in 1990 by community leaders Bob Elmore, Wayne and Marti Huizenga, Bob* and Millicent Steele, and William* and Norma Horvitz.  The local membership recognized in our Leaders in Giving book join 418 other Tocqueville Societies across the United States whose 23,000 members invested more than $453 million during the 2007-08 campaign year.  In Broward County, Tocqueville members contributed 15% of the dollars raised during this same campaign year through major personal gifts.

Locally, as well as nationally, generous gifts from individual donors are what make it possible for us to improve lives, strengthen communities and partner with others to create long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place.   These leaders in giving are our visionaries, our champions.  They are people who advance the common good by funding initiatives that focus on the building blocks for a good life - a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family, and good health.

Membership in the Society is granted to individuals who give a minimum contribution of $10,000 annually to United Way.  National Society Membership is granted to individuals who contribute $100,000 or more per year.  Partnership with United Way’s Million Dollar Roundtable is limited to individuals who have contributed $1,000,000 or more to the United Way cause.  United Way of Broward County benefits from six members in the Million Dollar Roundtable and two National members.

What United Ways Do

Advancing the Common Good

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania video on Advancing the Common Good, featuring Brian Gallagher (President & CEO - United Way of America)

FOR MANY MILLIONS OF HARD-WORKING FAMILIES, the basic ingredients for a good life are increasingly beyond reach. Almost one in four working parents don't earn enough to provide for their families. An alarming 25 percent of teenagers will not graduate on time, imperiling their chances to make a successful transition to adulthood. Only one in three adults can be considered healthy, based on risk factor data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more than 49 million Americans lack even basic health insurance.

Our nation can't accept these conditions. We need to challenge our systems-to create opportunities for a better life for everyone. To move more aggressively in this direction, United Way drew on research and sought input from a broad range of partners to gauge where progress has-and has not-been made over the last 10 years.
