United Way of Broward County, in collaboration with community partners, is proud to offer an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program, providing free tax assistance to low-income families in the community. In addition, United Way of Broward County’s Mobile Resource Center, along with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workers, is touring the county through April 14 in order to reach residents who do not have the ability or means to access accountants nor financial advisors.

United Way of Broward County’s Empowering Effective Teachers Task Force has released its report to the community, Building Strong Communities: Empowering Effective Teaching So Children Excel. The report includes findings and recommendations to improve the quality of education in Broward County by better preparing great teachers, accurately measuring teacher effectiveness and retaining the best teachers. Upon the completion of the Task Force’s findings, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation generously granted United Way of Broward County additional funds to continue its efforts supporting public education in Broward County.

United Way of Broward County will hold its 11th annual food and wine event to raise funds for its Community Impact Fund which directly supports Broward County residents in need. Guests can sample delectable foods prepared by Fort Lauderdale’s top chefs and exquisite wines from all over the world at United Way of Broward County’s Red & White – Wine and Culinary Delight, presented by Consolidated Credit Counseling Services, Inc. and Premier Beverage Company. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty Six on Friday, February 10, 2012, with the Pier Top VIP reception starting at 6:00 p.m. and general admission at 7:00 p.m.

A search committee has been established and is comprised of United Way of Broward County board members and community leaders. In the interim, the organization will be led by Howard Bakalar, Senior Vice President, Chief Program Officer of Community Impact and Dan Kearns, Senior Vice President, Operations and Chief Financial Officer.

20th Annual Day of Caring Presented by Memorial Healthcare System - Great Success

More than 1,000 volunteers transformed the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center on Friday, October 21 for United Way of Broward County’s 20th Annual Day of Caring presented by Memorial Healthcare System. The day-long project consisted of painting 40 resident apartments and administration building, planting more than 100 trees and numerous shrubs, painting beautiful murals, and much more. Broward County Mayor Sue Gunzburger was the Honorary Day of Caring Chair.
