What is it?
The Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) is a 2-Day virtual youth summit hosted by the Broward Youth Coalition (BYC) students.
When is it?
Wednesday, July 22nd 2:00pm - 4:30pm
Thursday, July 23rd 2:00pm - 4:30pm
Where is it?
For the first time ever the YLI event will be held via Zoom. Following registration you will receive an email with Zoom log in information.
Who can participate?
All Middle and High School Students in Broward County.
What will I experience?
This 2 day event will consist of peer to peer sessions. Topics will relate to mental health promotion, self-care during a pandemic and drug prevention.
Highlights include keynote speaker, Marc Mero, a professional wrestler and motivational speaker, a chance to connect with peers, a live virtual talent show and so much more!
Special guest appearances may include former/current pro-athletes from the NFL and NBA, local radio personalities and even Celebrity Chef, Chris Valdes!
Both days will include prizes and giveaways!

Attendees can receive up to 10 hours of community service. (Must attend both days for full duration and commitment for Community Project to receive up to 10 community service hours.)

Marc is recognized as a Youth-Family Advocate and "American's #1 School Presenter."

Chef Chris Valdes
Miami native, Food Network Star Season 14 Finalist, and Florida Dairy Farmers Ambassador, celebrity Chef Chris Valdes has made an indelible impact in our community by helping to feed the most vulnerable during the current COVID 19 Crisis including seniors, needy families, single moms and frontline responders.
“Giving back to the community is very important to me and what I do”, says Chef Chris. “There’s a special feeling, an inner fulfillment, when you do good and give back. Simply priceless. Giving helps you maintain a humble state of mind”.
Helping his community and championing philanthropic causes is not new to Valdes. The Chef has supported the Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida, Flipany, American Liver Foundation, Amigos for Kids and Chapman Partnership for the homeless among other non profits. During the government shutdown at the beginning of 2019, Chef Chris fed over 1,000 furloughed federal workers at Miami International Airport. His humanitarian efforts have also extended abroad - Valdes visited Puerto Rico after Hurricane Irma to aid in the disaster relief effort by bringing toys to the children at area hospitals.
The Chef has a gifted palate and a unique ability to create amazing dishes by fusing Caribbean flavors with modern influences. His relentless drive to share his innovative recipes have led Chef Chris to create his own platform on YouTube and star in his very own series, Cooking with Chris.
Valdes has been featured on the covers of several magazines, and in local newspapers in Miami and was a finalist on the last season of Food Network Star and Star Salvation. He was also chosen to participate as a featured chef in many of the local and national food festivals including Carnival Miami’s Cork and Fork, the New York Food & Wine Festival and in several of the South Beach Food & Wine Festival VIP events.
Charlie Villanueva, Dallas Mavericks
Charlie Villaneuva is a first-generation Hispanic American, son of Dominican immigrants, Roberto Villaneuva and Dara Meja, born August 24, 1984 and raised in Queens, NY. Villaneuva on NBA player who signed a 5-year contract with the Detroit Pistons, back in July 2009, was drafted at the age of 20 by the Toronto Raptors, 7th overall (lottery selection) in the 2005 NBA Draft.
Charlie Villaneuva, best known as 'Charlie V' or 'CV', enjoyed a successful rookie season, averaging 13.0 points and 6.4 rebounds. He ranked second among all rookies in points and rebounds, and third in blocks and minutes. The 6' 10" forward set a Toronto franchise rookie single-game records for points (48) and rebounds (18). His rookie campaign was further highlighted by an appearance in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge at Houston All-Star Weekend, as well as NBA Rookie of the Month honors the month honors for the month of December 2005 and a spot on the All-NBA Rookie First Team. On September 23, 2014, Villaneuva signed with the Dallas Mavericks. He scored a season-high 26 points vs. Los Angeles Clippers and on August 6, 2015, Villaneuva re-signed with the Mavericks to a one-year deal.
