Housing Coordinator (SSVF)

Reports to: Landlord Relations Manager (SSVF)
Status:  Exempt, Full Time (Grant Funded)

General Description: This is a grant funded position under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. The Housing Coordinator is responsible for helping Veteran households obtain and maintain permanent housing focusing on Veterans served by United Way of Broward County’s (UWBC)’s SSVF Grant.

Primary Job Responsibility & Duties: 

  • Assists in developing an annual landlord recruitment and retention plan with applicable strategies and targets.
  • Maintains a centralized property database to inventory affordable housing units.
  • Utilizes MLS for available rental properties and contacts landlords based on potential leads for Veterans.
  • Collaborates regularly with case managers to ensure rapid implementation of housing services.
  • Works directly with Veteran clients to evaluate specific housing needs and set realistic expectations.
  • Researches and seeks available rental properties for Veteran clients based on their specific housing needs and preferences.
  • Conducts housing inspections in line with VA standards.
  • Assists Veterans with all necessary move-in paperwork including applications for rental assistance.
  • Ensures timely processing of rental assistance payments.
  • Documents housing activity in Housing Management Information System (HMIS), Salesforce platform, and any other required data systems.

Other Job Duties:   

  • Documents all landlord recruitment and relation activities.
  • Participates in community events, activities, and networking to meet and engage landlords/property managers.
    • Collaborates with the Quality Assurance Coordinator for SSVF to ensure housing for clients meets VA guidelines and is compliant with SSVF requirements.
  • Coordinates/collaborates with regional SSVF partner agencies and staff.
  • Develops knowledge of the SSVF program regulations, guidelines, procedures, and requirements including VA regulations and guidelines relating to program eligibility and participation, income determination, HUD VASH vouchers, Housing Quality Standards (HQS), rent reasonableness, payment standards, etc.
  • Provides trainings and updates to SSVF staff on housing issues and processes.
  • Develops knowledge of state and local building and occupancy laws or regulations.
  • Engages community partners to support the elimination of homelessness for Veterans and increase awareness of Veteran’s housing needs in Broward County.
  • Makes presentations to business leaders, community leaders, and internal staff.
  • Liaises with the MISSION UNITED Advisory Council.
  • Attends staff meetings, in-service trainings, supervision meetings, and community events.
  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
  • Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization’s crisis plan and response efforts.

Supervises: This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, unless applicant is a Veteran in which case an Associate’s Degree and relevant military service experience may be considered instead.
  • Prior real estate or housing services experience helpful
  • Experience working with landlords and property managers in Broward County.
  • Experience with accounting and payment processing helpful.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, public speaking experience a plus.
  • Experience with engaging communities and collaborating with human service organizations.
  • Strong desire to help others in need. Must be self-motivated, compassionate, have a positive attitude and determined to advocate for the rights and needs and vulnerable people in our community.
