Department of Veteran Affairs Awards United Way of Broward County $2 Million Grant

United Way of Broward County announced today it has received its single largest grant -- $2 million from the Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) Program,  a division of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  The one year grant will be used for the organization’s MISSION UNITED, a cooperative program among area agencies led by United Way supporting US military service members, veterans and their families in Broward County.


“This amazing grant will allow us to provide tremendous help in the community and to serve those who have already served us,” said Kathleen Cannon, President/CEO of United Way of Broward County.  “The needs of our veterans are great, and with this grant, we can reach and support so many of them in a significant way.”

United Way of Broward County is the lead agency among a collaboration of organizations that have joined forces to launch MISSION UNITED. The partners include American Red Cross South Florida region, 2-1-1 Broward, the Urban League of Broward County, Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida and Legal Aid Services of Broward County.  The grant provides for a host of essential services such as short-term case management for families at-risk of homelessness or coming out of homelessness.  With a grant this large, MISSION UNITED will also be able to use the funds for every day purposes that so many veterans need – security deposits for moving into a home, furniture, even food to fill a pantry, often for the first time.


According to recent reports, Florida has the third largest military veteran population in the United States. Estimates indicate that in the next few years, more than one million men and women will return home to integrate into the communities. MISSION UNITED was created to help veterans re-acclimate to civilian life by aligning existing services and creating solutions where there are gaps in supports.


Under the SSVF Program, the Veterans Administration awards grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives, like the United Way, that are dedicated to helping returning veterans.  Grantees provide eligible veteran families with outreach, case management and assistance in obtaining VA and other benefits such as health care services, daily living services and legal services. 


United Way of Broward County engaged Group Victory, the strategy and organization development consulting firm that lead the creation of this grant proposal. Group Victory will facilitate implementation of the project as well as sustainability planning for long-term programming.
