Veteran Community Engagement Officer

General Description: This position is responsible for creating and implementing an overall outreach plan to expand community knowledge of Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) by liaising with the Broward County Continuum of Care (CoC), governmental agencies, community organizations, and Veteran families.

Primary Job Responsibility & Duties: 

  • Educate Local Entities: Conduct comprehensive presentations to local governmental and non-governmental entities, including but not limited to city council members, community organizations, social service agencies, and other key stakeholders, about the services offered through the SSVF program. Learn about resources offered through each agency that could benefit SSVF families.
  • Relationship Management: Establish and maintain positive relationships with local governmental and non-governmental entities to promote collaboration and partnership in delivering SSVF services across the entire catchment area. Foster open lines of communication and actively participate in relevant community meetings, events, and working groups.
  • Program Promotion: Develop and implement strategic plans and initiatives to raise awareness of the SSVF program within the community. Lead efforts to establish program access points within the community. Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to create promotional materials, organize outreach events, and leverage various media channels to reach the target audience.
  • Point of Contact: Serve as the primary point of contact for community inquiries, concerns, and requests related to the SSVF program. Respond promptly and professionally, providing accurate information and guidance in accordance with the most recent version of the SSVF program guide.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure all activities and actions align with the SSVF program guide and comply with program regulations, policies, and procedures. Maintain accurate records and documentation of community engagement efforts, including meeting minutes, progress reports, and statistical data as required.

Other Job Duties:   

  • Establish both formal and informal alliances with organizations which have similar or allied goals, local law enforcement, health care providers, community centers, and service providers.
  • Provide or arrange training, technical assistance, and workforce development for community partners, municipalities, school board and other Broward County groups on Mission United and the SSVF program.
  • Represent Mission United at the Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse Prevention.
  • Meet with and enlist key local stakeholders, municipalities, and service providers to promote the goals of the United Way Mission United Initiative.
  • Participate in the development of the Mission United strategic plans selecting goals, objectives, and targets.
  • Organize, coordinate, or assist in the organization of activities, such as the veteran standdown, the Homelessness Symposium and Warrior Wednesday.
  • Responsible for prompt compliance with all United Way Mission United regulations and requirements.
  • Maintain productivity requirement and expected.
  • Ability to prioritize and adjust to multiple assignments with potentially conflicting timelines
  • Will be required to work frequent evenings and weekends.
  • Must drive to various outreach locations in Broward. MUST have and maintain reliable transportation.
  • Responsible and accountable for attendance at Advisory Council meetings, supervision meetings, and audit preparation meetings.
  • Serve as a customer service role model to insure a positive relationship in interactions with all clients, the community, and peers.
  • Perform other duties that may be necessary to maintain the success of the organization.
  • Perform duties as needed and/or requested to support and maintain accreditation standards and continuous quality improvement of the Commission on Substance Abuse and United Way of Broward.
  • Must be able to be at work on a consistent basis with regular attendance and punctuality and be willing and able to handle all the duties and responsibilities of this position on a daily basis.
  • Responds appropriately and effectively to the diversity of co-workers, consumers and stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties and assumes other responsibilities as requested by supervisor.
  • Identify opportunities for new and existing engagement efforts.
  • Prepare written materials for the purposes of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Participate in the quality improvement process.
  • As needed work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization’s crisis plan and response efforts.
  • Actively participate in the COA accreditation process.

Supervises:  Volunteers

Education & Experience: 

  • Graduation from an accredited college or University with a Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services/Social Services related field, and one to three years of combined experience in community outreach. Five years of relevant experience may be supplemented for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience with building community relationships, convening workgroups, and working with Veteran or military families.
  • Experience working with data to inform practice.
  • Proficient skills working with computers and software programs.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders in the community.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
