Senior Success: MISSION UNITED Uplifts Veteran Couple

One Couple’s Journey in Securing Affordable Housing

Charlotte and Charles have been married for 50 years, and now in their 70s, this Veteran household began to have difficulties with affording the rising costs of housing in Broward County.

“Our rent already was high, and the landlord was going to increase it again by 11%. We didn’t know what to do. One day, I was in one of my doctor’s offices, and I saw information about MISSION UNITED. Housing support was among the many services offered. When I called, I immediately got connected to a case manager. The care with MISSION UNITED has been a total blessing for us. We have been flabbergasted by the services available to help us,” says Charlotte.

United Way of Broward County’s MISSION UNITED initiative provides comprehensive, wraparound services to help U.S. Veterans like the Hunts find stability and well-being in their post-military lives, and the wide range of assistance includes job placement, housing support, counseling services, and much more.

“In addition to challenges with housing, we had car problems, and we just didn’t have the extra money. I told my case manager about this unexpected expense, and MISSION UNITED helped us find a way to pay for these repairs. Because of MISSION UNITED, our life has changed. With MISSION UNITED’s guidance, we have been able to save money, and now we are looking to buy a home. Because of the generosity from donors, Veterans like Charles and I can get assistance with housing and not end up homeless.”
