FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR

Job Title: Family and Community Engagement Coordinator

Reports to: Community Partnership School Manager
Status: Non-Exempt, Full Time (Grant-funded)

General Description: This position is responsible for designing and implementing an overall outreach plan to strengthen family engagement at Hallandale Magnet High School. As a core staff member of the Community Partnership School™, this role will plan intergenerational activities and increase access to social services for the campus and neighboring community.

Primary Job Responsibilities & Duties: 

  1. Collaborate with Community Partnership School Manager and school leadership to integrate new programming into the unique educational environment of Hallandale Magnet High School.
  2. Manage the family resource room at Hallandale High to become a hub of services for the students and the community.
  3. Be an active presence in the life and culture of Hallandale High, building rapport with students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members to be an advocate for students and community needs.
  4. Maintain accurate and complete family and community member engagement data.

 Secondary Job Duties:

  • Assist in the implementation of an overall outreach plan to engage families to participate in activities and services on campus and in the community.
  • Ensure the family resource room has accurate inventory to meet the expressed needs of the community (example: technology, clothing, school supplies, food).
  • Facilitate the Community Leadership Council, a meeting of stakeholders specific to the school community with the purpose of prioritizing community-led initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for new and existing engagement efforts. Create new pathways for participation.
  • Plan, direct, and implement community activities. Manage event logistics, participant registration, marketing, and budget.
  • Identify, engage, and support community action groups and centers of influence in the community.
  • Coordinate local marketing activities, awareness campaigns, and events.
  • Coordinate family educational opportunities for the purposes of promoting student achievement, student attendance, and home-school partnerships.
  • Expand opportunities for families and the community to attend adult education programs (ESOL, GED, adult literacy, postsecondary education, job training) in Hallandale Beach.
  • Make home visits and phone calls to identify parent needs and program eligibility.
  • Participate in school resource team meetings to provide information on relevant referrals.
  • Develop a strong knowledge base and stay current on job-related issues and trends.
  • Utilize data management system for proper documentation.
  • Submit all documentation in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to a positive, engaging work environment.
  • Supported by Community Partnership School Manager, liaison with school administrative personnel to align system goals, program objects and community services.

Other Job Duties:

  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as requested by supervisor.
  • Present the Community Partnership School™ model to multiple stakeholders, including students, parents, and community leaders.
  • Prepare written materials for the purposes of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Participate actively in departmental meetings, training and education, as well as the quality improvement process.
  • Collaborate in fundraising and grant writing.
  • Possible arrange for transportation of clients.
  • As needed, work flexible hours including evenings and weekends,
  • Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization’s crisis plan and response efforts.
  • Understands and respects the diversity of economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds and situations.
  • Actively participate in the COA accreditation process.

Supervises: No Supervision Duties

Education, Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a Human Services, Social Services, Education or related field and one to two years of combined experience in community outreach OR graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in a Human Services/Social Services related field and three to four years of combined experience in community outreach OR high school diploma or GED equivalent and five years of relevant experience.
  • Be energetic, passionate, and adaptable with a deep commitment to social service, empathy for children and families and a positive approach to embracing and managing change.
  • Experience with building community relationships, convening workshops and working with families on educational or community issues.
  • Demonstrate understanding of high-needs communities and knowledge of community organizing principles.
  • Experience working with data to inform practice.
  • Proficient skills working with computers and software programs.
  • Skilled at public speaking and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders in the school.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills (English required; Spanish, Haitian Creole, Russian, or Ukrainian highly desirable and preferred).

Environment & Physical Demands: The environment is climate controlled (i.e., heated and air-conditioned).  Lighting is adequate through overhead lighting as well as windows and blinds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Physical demands include sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting approximately 25 pounds, regular use of the telephone, copier, fax and computer.  Demands also involve protracted concentration.
