MISSION UNITED Is Committed to Veterans’ Well-Being Every Day of the Year

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a reminder of the sacrifices made by service members who died defending the United States. While many people associate this commemorative day with barbecues, parades, and the unofficial start of summer, its true purpose runs much deeper: It is a time to reflect on the courage, dedication, and valor of countless men and women who have fought for our freedoms.
Whether by attending a ceremony, visiting a military cemetery, or simply pausing in gratitude, taking time to reflect ensures military heroes always will be remembered. Here are several events across Broward for you to commemorate Memorial Day, Veterans, and their courage and sacrifices.

While Memorial Day serves as a powerful symbol to honor the fallen, it calls attention to the collective power we have to support Veterans after their military service. Broward County is home to over 100,000 Veterans, and many face significant, complex challenges when returning to civilian life.
These challenges include employment difficulties, stable homes, and struggles with both mental health and physical health. Recognizing these varied needs, United Way Broward's MISSION UNITED provides comprehensive, wraparound services to Veterans, ensuring they receive essential resources to rebuild their lives after service. These services include:
Employment and Workforce Readiness
A significant hurdle many Veterans face is reintegrating into the workforce. Despite their discipline and expertise, many struggle to find employment that aligns with their skills. Through MISSION UNITED, Veterans are accessing career counseling, job-placement assistance, and specialized training programs to help them develop marketable skills. The program also works closely with local businesses to encourage the hiring of Veterans.
Housing Resources
Safe, stable housing is critical to a Veteran’s well-being, yet many often face the possibility of homelessness. MISSION UNITED helps Veterans find affordable housing, offers financial assistance, and connects them with organizations specializing in securing homes. United Way Broward also has residences in our community providing transitional and long-term housing support.
Mental Health Support
The emotional toll of service often lingers long after Veterans return home. Many struggle with post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression, making the transition to civilian life even more challenging. Through MISSION UNITED, Veterans are accessing counseling services, peer-support programs, and a wide range of mental health resources.
Legal Assistance
Veterans sometimes face legal barriers, such as resolving disputes related to benefits, housing, or employment. MISSION UNITED offers pro bono legal aid services to assist with claims, benefits processing, and other legal matters. Since its inception in 2013, MISSION UNITED has provided over 9,000 Veterans with pro bono legal assistance.
Education and Skills Development
Many Veterans want to advance their education after service, either by earning degrees or pursuing vocational training. MISSION UNITED connects Veterans with educational counseling and skills-building workshops to help them succeed professionally.
While Memorial Day is a dedicated time of reflection, our United Way recognizes Veterans need care and support year-round. Through advocacy, community engagement, and direct services, MISSION UNITED is making sure Veterans receive the resources they need to thrive.
