United Way Broward's Colleagues Reflect on the Powerful Legacy of This Celebration
by Kathleen Cannon, LCSW, President and CEO at United Way Broward
Every year, Black History Month brings a vibrant energy that is both grounding and uplifting. It’s a celebration of culture and stories shaping generations, and it invites us to reflect on the brilliance, resilience, and creativity influencing our world. This month encourages us to appreciate the innovators, artists, leaders, and everyday heroes whose contributions have formed the foundations of so many cultural and social milestones.
At United Way Broward, this celebration is especially meaningful because it lives through the voices of the majority of our colleagues. Their experiences, memories, and reflections bring depth to the commemoration — reframing it from a historical observance into a shared journey. As we listen to the stories each of us have, we gain an understanding of the rich heritage shaping our great community.
This year, several of United Way Broward’s employees spoke about what Black History Month means to them. Their insights, whether joyful or reflective, remind us why this month matters. Get ready to hear how they experience Black History Month.
Black History Month shows us that history continues to move, influence, and inspire. It lives in our music, our language, our traditions, our creative expression, and our daily events. This month celebrates the courage of people who paved the way so all can have dignity and opportunity.
Our colleagues’ perspectives highlight the importance of honoring the past while engaging fully with the present, and they remind us the experiences passed across generations through families and communities influence us in varied and dynamic ways — how we support one another, how we step into opportunities, and how we think about the future.
When we engage in these conversations and express what is meaningful to us, we expand each other’s consciousness, strengthen our collective awareness, and build a connected community.
All of us at United Way Broward champion the powerful values of Black History Month, and we invite everyone to participate with spirit and commitment.
